ABOUT CANYON
Canyon, Texas is a residential community in the Texas Panhandle. The city derrives its name from the Palo Duro Canyon, one of the most stunning landscapes in the state, and the last stronghold of the Comanche Indians. The land surrounding Canyon is ideal for farming and cattle ranching, industries which insulated the city in times of economic hardship. In 1910, West Texas State University was established in Canyon, and has been responsible for many aspects of the city’s growth ever since. Georgia O’Keeffe, one of the most celebrated artists in American history, was the head of the art department at West Texas State from 1916-1918. It is widely believed that the nearby Palo Duro Canyon inspired the development of O’Keeffe’s distinctive Southwestern style. Mortgage and loan buyers in Canyon have also seen steady growth.
