ABOUT GLADEWATER
Gladewater, Texas was originally founded as a railway stop in 1873 and was primarily a farming and ranching community. On April 7, 1931, the first Gladewater oil well blew in, which led to a population increase during the 1930s from about 500 to around 8,000 people. Civic improvements in the 1940s included an extensive paving project, a commercial airfield, and the construction of Lake Gladewater, which provides recreation for city residents. The town is most famous as a base during Elvis Presley’s early career, and also as the town in which Johnny Cash wrote “I Walk the Line.” Gladewater has enjoyed a steadily growing population and local economy since the 1920’s. Mortgage and loan buyers in Gladewater have also seen steady growth.
