ABOUT SWEETWATER
The first train arrived in Sweetwater, Texas in 1881, beginning the city’s long history as a railroad town. To increase the area’s appeal to settlers, the citizens of Sweetwater built four small lakes in their city, which attracted more residents and business developers, and remains one of the recreational highlights of the town to this day. Gulf Oil Refinery operated in Sweetwater from the 1920’s-50’s, as did many cotton related businesses and cattle ranchers. The city remains a production hub for cotton, cattle, and oil today. Sweetwater is in the center of the leading wind generation areas in the Western Hemisphere, making the city the “Wind Turbine Capital of Texas.” Mortgage and loan buyers in Sweetwater have also seen steady growth.
