ABOUT VERNON
Vernon, Texas was first settled in 1878 by Charles Doan, who built an adobe house (which still stands in the city center) and operated a general store that served thousands of cowboys driving cattle north along the trail that passed near the city. By 1882, Vernon embodied the spirit of the wild west, with bellowing herds of cattle, howling coyotes, hollering cowboys, and rowdy gambling halls lining the city streets. Today, Vernon is home to many major businesses and industries, including a branch of Tyson Foods, Rhodia, Inc., and the North Texas State Hospital. The city has enjoyed economic prosperity and continuous population growth since the 1980’s. Mortgage and loan buyers in Vernon have also seen steady growth.
